Poker is a card game in which players place bets against each other based on the value of their cards. Players may use real cash or chips (normally made of plastic or ceramic) to place bets. Each player’s cards are revealed to all other players during the betting round, so that a good player can accurately predict opponent hands to make profitable decisions throughout a game.
Each player has two personal cards in their hand and five community cards on the table. The cards are combined into a “pot” in which the player with the highest five-card hand wins. A player can also win a pot by raising on their turn, even if they do not have the best hand, by outraising other players.
When a player raises on their turn, each other active player must either match the raise or fold their hand. This is referred to as an “equalization method.” If a player cannot raise their stake as high as the last raiser, they can choose to fold. Otherwise, they must call the raise or remain in the pot until a showdown.
